Smuggling in India Report 2024-25 28
Case 6: Heroin traĜcking via false cavities in
passenger luggage
In April 2024, 4.54 kg of heroin was seized
from the false cavities of a backpack being
carried by a female passenger arriving from
Malaysia at IGI Airport, New Delhi.
c. Ganja/Cannabis
Ganja, also known as cannabis or marijuana, is one of the most widely used psy-
choactive substances in the world. Among the cases detected by DRI, wherein ganja
was smuggled through land routes, a consistent modus operandi emerged: con-
cealment in specially created hidden compartments within vehicles, including cav-
ities in the chassis, driver’s cabins, trailers, car roofs, and other modified spaces
designed to evade detection.
In FY 2024-25, DRI registered a total of 25 cases of ganja (excluding hydroponic
weed), resulting in the seizure of 8952.72 kg.
