Case 11: 30 kg methamphetamine tablets
seized from vehicle in Assam
In June 2024, 30 kg of methamphet-
amine tablets was seized from specially
built cavity of a vehicle at Sonabarighat
bypass, Cachar, Assam.
f. Mephedrone (MD)
Mephedrone, chemically known as 4-methylmethcathinone (4-MMC), is a syn-
thetic stimulant from the cathinone family, structurally related to amphetamines
and MDMA (Ecstasy). Unlike traditional narcotics such as opiates or cannabis,
mephedrone poses a modern synthetic threat to India’s anti-drug efforts. Its
domestic production, rising urban demand, and misuse of digital platforms for
distribution make enforcement particularly challenging and resource-intensive.
During FY 2024–25, the DRI has made 5 seizures of mephedrone (including fac-
tory busts).

sengers enroute to Mumbai
In December 2024, 16 kg of fine crys-
talline mephedrone was seized from 2
passengers travelling in a bus from
Hyderabad to Vashi, Mumbai.
