 Cyber Forensics Lab at DRI, Mumbai Zonal Unit
DRI, Mumbai Zonal Unit has a functioning Cyber Forensics Lab, which was set up around 2010. Currently, the Lab caters to the digital forensics requirements of all formations of CBIC in addition to DRI, such as DGGI, AIU, SIIB and other preventive formations of CBIC.
Over the past couple of years, substantial improvements have been made to the lab, both in terms of physical infrastructure as well as capacity augmentation.
A few additional hardware as well as software equipment have been procured, to keep pace with developments in technology. The lab continues to help provide forensic solutions to CBIC formations and it is planned to continue with periodic augmentation of capacity, especially technical, to ensure that digital evidence on newer varieties of devices can be extracted by the lab faster.
An Eye on the Future
The Manual also explores recent develoments in technology and tools increasingly being used in committing frauds. A separate section exploring cloud computing has been included. It is expected that this area will see much developments in future, since a lot of instances have been noticed, of this tool being used by fraudsters.
Capacity building of officers in the area of handling of digital evidence and digital forensics, especially those at the cutting edge, is the need of the hour. Keeping the evidentiary value of digital evidence intact through various processes presents problems that are very different from the problems encountered in handling traditional physical
