67 Smuggling in India Report 2024-25
e. Avian Species
Avian species trafficking into India is an emerging
challenge, with exotic birds being smuggled
from Southeast Asia, to meet rising domestic
demand for rare and ornamental pets. Spe-
cies such as macaws, parakeets, Broad-
bills, and cockatoos are trafficked for
pet trade. These birds are transported
in cramped, inhumane conditions,
resulting in high mortality rates.
Case 5: Exotic birds seized
at Mumbai airport
In August 2024, DRI officers
intercepted 5 passengers
arriving from Bangkok at
CSMI Airport, Mumbai.
Examination of their baggage
led to the recovery and seizure
of 7 exotic birds, identified as
Birds of Paradise protected
under Appendix II of CITES
and Schedule IV of the Wild-
life (Protection) Act, 1972.
