71 Smuggling in India Report 2024-25
h. Others
In FY 2024–25, DRI has booked several other wild-
life trafficking cases, including those involving
illegal trade in marine wildlife articles such
as seahorses, sea cucumbers, corals, am-
bergris, and ornamental fish. The trade
is primarily driven by demand in tra-
ditional medicine, luxury goods
markets, and the aquarium indus-
try, posing a serious risk to
marine biodiversity.
Case 8: Protected marine
wildlife articles seized in
Andhra Pradesh
In December 2024, DRI
officers apprehended 2
persons at Srisailam,
Andhra Pradesh (AP) and
seized 9.81 kg of dead
Black Corals, 0.29 kg of
dead Soft Corals, and 6
Trapezium Horse Conches,
along with two vehicles
used for trafficking. In a
swift follow-up, a supplier
from Ongole, AP was
apprehended and 6.64 kg
of dead Black Corals were
recovered.
