Smuggling in India Report 2024-25 64
b. Elephant Tusks
Asiatic Elephants remain targeted for ivory, prized for decorative and traditional
uses. In FY 2024-25, DRI seized 55.76 kg of elephant tusks and 6.81 kg of ele-
phant molar teeth in 4 cases booked in Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Assam.
These cases highlight the persistent poaching and organized ivory trafficking,
with routes concentrated in the North-East Region and Southern India.
Case 2: 31.45 kg ivory seized in Kerala
In March 2025, DRI officers intercepted a gang
involved in illegal wildlife trade in Nilambur, Malap-
puram District (Kerala). A search at an electrical
shop led to the apprehension of 8 individuals and
recovery of 2 elephant tusks (each 5.4 feet long, total
weight 31.45 kg), protected under Schedule I of the
Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
