Case 10: Seizure of 27.55 MT poppy
seeds concealed in misdeclared soap
nuts consignment

In January 2025, DRI officers intercepted
two containers arriving at Kolkata port
from Port Klang, Malaysia, that were
declared as “mixed-color soap nuts and
chips”. Detailed examination revealed
27.55 MT of concealed poppy seeds, lead-
ing to the seizure of the entire consign-
ment.

Smuggling of Toys

The illicit import of cheap and substandard toys into
India has surged, evading the applicable customs
duties and bypassing the quality checks mandated
by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Many of
these toys contain toxic materials like lead, harmful
plastics, and small detachable parts posing choking
hazards, endangering children’s safety. The trend
underscores the need for stricter enforcement,
enhanced border vigilance, and greater public
awareness to protect consumers.
