               Chennai port

In September 2024, DRI intercepted seven containers at Chennai port,
imported from Malaysia and declared to contain “Processed Coconut
Broom” and “Urad Gota.” Upon examination, the containers were found
concealed with 168.45 MT of areca nuts valued at ₹9.75 crore, which
               were subsequently seized.

             crore
In November 2024, DRI busted the modus operandi of import of raw areca
nuts in the guise of roasted areca nuts and a total of 1008 MT of areca nut
valued at ₹13.35 crore were seized.

            b. Smuggling of Poppy Seeds

The smuggling of poppy seeds into India prevails due to high demand and strict
cultivation controls. Illicit imports, mainly from Afghanistan, Myanmar, and
Turkey harm public health and local farmers. In FY 2024-25, DRI effected 6
seizures of smuggled poppy seeds and a total of 122.18 MT of poppy seeds valued
at ₹22.28 crore were seized across different ports.
