Air passengers trying to smuggle gold into India were not far behind in using their creativity to try and outsmart DRI and Custom officials. DRI officers seized gold from cardboard
boxes and coverings meant to be used for chocolates, face creams and even nuts and bolts. A few such seizures and concealments employed by air passengers to smugglegoldareshownbelow:
Seizure of Gold from Nuts and Bolts
Officers of DRI intercepted 6 passengers upon their arrival at Vijaywada from Dubai (UAE). On examination, it was found that gold was concealed in the form of sticks in cavities of bolts inside boxes labeled as "LCD/LED/PLASMA WALL BRACKET".
Gold Recovered from Gold Paste
Officers of ORI intercepted 8 passengers, including airline crew upon their arrival at Calicut from Dubai (UAE). On examination, it was found that gold was concealed in their body in paste form. A total of 8 kg smuggled gold was extracted and seized from 9.8 kg of gold paste
Seizure of Gold from Chocolate Cardboard
Officers of DRI intercepted a passenger upon her arrival at Indore from Dubai (UAE). On examination, it was that she was carrying cardboard boxes for chocolates and biscuits. Gold was concealed between the cardboard layers. 500 gm gold was seized.
