Smuggling in India Report 2024-25 44
Case 5: Gold hidden in aircraft components seized at Cochin airport
In July 2024, DRI seized 12 gold bars weighing 1.39 kg from an aircraft arriv-
ing from Dubai at Cochin Airport. The bars were cleverly concealed inside
four LED drivers hidden behind the rear toilet compartment walls.
iii. Concealment in Baggage
Baggage concealment remains a common smuggling method on air routes. Syndi-
cates increasingly modify luggage with false bottoms, double linings, hidden
pouches and bespoke compartments, often in high-end suitcases (cavities behind
wheels, under frames, inside handles). Gold in wax form is also concealed in
toiletry kits, shoe soles, food containers, electronic goods, and children’s toys, in
an attempt to evade detection through X-ray screening.
