Page 163 - SMUGGLING IN INDIA REPORT FOR 2020-2021
P. 163
Overview
In a society that is fast reaching a stage of near-total reliance on electronic systems, crimes are increasingly committed with significant dependence on digital means, especially in cases of smuggling and commercial fraud, where much of the planning and document-sharing is done via electronic means, leading to a lot of digital evidence likely to be found in mobile phones, laptops, hard drives, removable media like USBs and at times, on cloud. As an organization at the forefront of embracing technology and equipping itself to deal with futuristic challenges, DRI identified the need for formalizing investigations and imparting discipline to the functioning of its officers, keeping pace with the developments in the digital world.
DRI played a key role in formulating a Digital Investigation Manual for all investigating formations under CBIC, a first- of-its-kind effort within CBIC. The manual was prepared by a
committee headed by the Pr.DGRI with officers from DRI, DGGI, DG Systems and NACIN, after a lot of meticulous research and study. The manual, released in July 2020 by the Chairman, CBIC, presents detailed literature on all aspects of digital evidence and digital forensics and provides practical solutions on incorporating global best practices in digital forensics while conducting investigations.
