Source-wise analysis presented below from the seizures effected by the DRI suggest Dubai, Myanmar and Nepal as major sources of cigarette smuggling into India, though source is unknown in few cases.
Most of the seized cigarettes are violative of COTPA (Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products Act) in as much as COTPA requires stringent depiction of pictorial warnings on the packaging, which are not found in many cases. Consequently, there are serious implications on the economy as also health concerns for consumers at large.
