Overview
DRI is the premier intelligence agency of the country mandated to enforce Customs Act, 1962. It works to secure the economic security of the nation by combating smuggling and preventing duty evasion & misuse of incentives granted for import and export of goods. The Customs Act, 1962 provides for confiscation of goods imported or exported contrary to the provisions of the Customs Act or any other law in force. The mandate of DRI goes beyond the enforcement of Customs Act and extends to enforcement of various
statutes or allied acts as far as they relate to import/export.
DRI, being the apex agency in the field of anti-smuggling in India, enforces the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962 and over fifty other allied Acts including the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, COFEPOSA, Wildlife Protection Act, Food Safety and Standards Act, Drugs and Cosmetics Act, NDPS Act, Arms Act, WMD Act, Legal Metrology Act, Antiquities and Art Treasures Act, SEZ Act etc.
