The preferred routes of gold smuggling until recently were the air routes from middle- east, from where most of the gold was being pushed illegally into India. The Customs and DRI officials at Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Cochin airports, had made large seizures of smuggled gold originating
mainly from the middle-east, barring a few from Thailand and Hong Kong. The carriers on these routes were predominantly the poor labourers working in the Gulf region. Due to the increased surveillance of Indian Customs and DRI at the international airports, the gold smuggling has become a risky proposition.
